Search shows how TV advertisements diffuse bad eating habits

On the weekends, alcohol takes place on TV

During the weekends, 216 programming hours were registered and showed, as on weekdays, the products are diffused with a different frequency. In this case, the night period represents a high level of exposure to food, among 22.3% of all commercials. Besides that, on weekends there is an increase of alcoholic drinks commercials.

The established data were, of 1.395 products announcements analyzed, 57,8% belong to the fat, oil, sweet and sugar group. The second biggest group analyzed represents bread, cereals and pasta, with 21,2%. Afterwards, with 11,7% and 9,3%, are the milk, yogurt and cheese group and the meat, eggs and leguminous food group, clarifying the lack of fruits and vegetables.

The obtained results showed, however, TV has a powerful influence on diffusing food products and on the eating habits, mainly among children and adolescents who spend more time in front of the TV and are led, unconsciously, to an incorrect behavior when it comes to choose what to eat, getting a no healthy diet.

Knowing the means of communication and how they can handle people's life is extremely important to help parents to take care of their children feeding. TV, according to the search, creates strategies to interfere in the alimentary education, giving them an incorrect concept of consumed products.

Many times, children and adolescents know the right way to feed themselves, but they prefer the fast food, such as snacks and soft drinks, besides they think fast food is more delicious. “It shows that it is not only a knowledge problem, but it is also an emotional problem that has been proportioned by environment issues, that is, what the family and friends eat”, explains the researcher.

Almeida says the school breaks are the most opportune time for children and adolescents eat in a wrong way. “Usually they prefer a snack and a soda at the cafeteria and completely forget to bring something home made”, he assures. The researcher highlights that parents have a great influence on it, whereas, most of the time, it is a lot easier for them to have their children buying something instead of making it.

To revert the situation, not particularly of the obese child itself, but taking into account the environment around the child, it is necessary establishment of public politics to change these environments and place youth in a healthier surrounding, teaching at the same time how to have a healthier life, regardless any kind of food. It is important to know what and how to eat.
